A guide to bucket moulds

Overview

Bucket mould is one of the leading injection molds in the industrial mold series. Being in the plastic pail bucket mould manufacturing industry for more than ten years, YuanCheng Mold has rich experience in plastic bucket mold technology and bucket mold manufacturing.

Parts of a typical bucket mold

Bucket molds are made up of several different parts. Let’s see what these parts are and what is the function of each part. 

  • Gate

The gate is the part of the mould that controls molten plastic flow into the cavity. The gate is usually located on the perimeter of the mold and can be either opened or closed. The type of gate to use depends on the shape of the bucket.

  • Cavity

The cavity is where the actual moulded part is created. It’s made of two halves that fit together snugly, similar to a clamshell. When molten plastic material is injected into the cavity, it takes on the shape of the cavity and solidifies once it cools down. 

  • Sprue

The sprue is the passage that connects the gate to the cavity. Its primary purpose is to guide molten plastic material into the runner system. 

  • The runner system 

The runner system is a network of channels that transport molten plastic material from the sprue to the cavities of the mould. The runner system typically consists of two parts: cold and hot runners. Cold runners are made out of materials that can’t withstand high temperatures. As a result, they’re only used for low-volume production runs. On the other hand, hot runners are made out of heat-resistant materials such as steel or nickel alloys. They can be used for high-volume production runs because they can remain at high temperatures without being damaged. The runner helps to evenly distribute the plastic throughout the bucket mold and prevents forming of air pockets.

The use of hot runner sprues for the production of plastic buckets has the following advantages

1: No mould rise, mould clamping, overflow, gapping, etc.

2: Uniform wall thickness of the finished barrel, deviation <0.04mm.

3: High finished product rate, up to 99% or more.

4: Shorter forming cycle.

5: Increased strength. Empty barrels can be dropped from a height of 20 metres without breaking, and filled with water and lifted to a height of 1 metre without breaking or cracking.

6: Cost reduction.

  • The ejector system 

The ejector system is responsible for removing the molded bucket from the cavity once it has cooled down and solidified. The ejector system typically consists of an ejector pin connected to an ejector plate. The ejector pin pushes against the back side of the molded bucket while the ejector plate pulls it away from the front side. This action causes the molded bucket to be ejected from the cavity so that it can be removed from the mould altogether.
